Our Founder and President
Karen Jean Matsko Hood founded Hope for Foster Children, a Washington State non-profit organization in 2001. She runs it on a volunteer basis and receives no remuneration for her work.
Hood was born and raised in Great Falls, Montana, attended the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University in Minnesota and received a Bachelor Degree in Natural Science with minors in Psychology and Secondary Education. After graduating, Karen and her husband taught science and math on the island of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Hood completed her Master's Degree at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington and is currently working on her Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership there. She is a devoted mother of ten children and has both adopted and foster children. She is a trained teacher and researcher, and also serves as a volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocate in the Spokane Juvenile Justice System. She is a passionate advocate for children and children’s rights. Hood currently resides in Greenacres, Washington with her husband and children. Her interests include writing, teaching and volunteering. Hood also is a literary advocate for youth and adults. She enjoys cooking, baking, photography, raising Icelandic horses and Icelandic sheepdogs, indoor and outdoor gardening, cultivating flowering plants and orchids, and bird-watching, and appreciates nature and the environment.
